How to Calm God’s Anger
Righteousness is the key to winning God’s heart, dear brothers and sisters, and today we’ll talk about how to do it. In this world, we know many ways to calm someone’s anger. Maybe you send a kind gift or say sweet words to make someone feel better. But calming God’s anger and winning His heart is not so simple. In Genesis 43:11, Jacob sent gifts to Joseph—myrrh, honey, spices, balm, pistachios, and almonds—to calm his anger and win his favor. Jacob thought, “If I send the best things from my land, Joseph’s heart will soften.” In the same way, how can we win God’s heart? Can we do it with money? With gold or silver? No, my friends! Today, we’ll learn about the powerful way to win God’s heart through righteousness. Let’s dive into God’s Word together!
Ways to Win God’s Heart with Righteousness
Righteousness—The Best Gift for God
The first gift Jacob sent to Joseph was “myrrh.” In the Bible, myrrh is a symbol of righteousness. Isaiah 61:3 says God will give “a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor,” which is linked to righteousness. But where does this righteousness come from? Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross at Golgotha. Through that blood, sinners like us can become righteous. Genesis 15:6 tells us, “Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness”. Abram believed in the righteous God, and that faith made him righteous.
Friends, if we want to win God’s heart with righteousness, we must put our faith in Jesus’ blood. God doesn’t want our money. Deuteronomy 10:17 says, “For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes”. To win God’s heart, we must live righteously. When we do, our lives become honorable, and God lifts us up in His presence. Righteousness makes us shine in this world and brings glory to God.
God’s Word—A Sweet Gift Like Honey
The second gift Jacob sent was “honey.” Honey is special because it never spoils. Iron rusts, gold tarnishes over time, but honey stays pure forever. In the same way, God’s Word never fades—it’s alive and eternal. Psalm 119:103-104 says, “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path” .
Brothers and sisters, when we read and think about God’s Word every day, it’s like tasting honey. It fills us with wisdom. This wisdom helps us hate wrong paths and stay pure. For example, imagine a young person scrolling through social media. If they see something sinful, God’s Word in their heart will say, “No, turn away!” Because the honey of God’s Word teaches us to dislike sin. When we offer this honey—God’s Word—as a gift to Him by living it out, we win His heart. God smiles when we treasure His Word and let it guide our lives.
Wisdom—The Path to Honor
The Bible tells us about David in 1 Samuel 18:30: “David behaved more wisely than all the servants of Saul, so that his name became highly esteemed”. Why was David honored? Because he thought about God’s Word day and night. His wisdom made him stand out among all of Saul’s servants. Isaiah 52:13 also says, “See, my servant will act wisely; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted”.
What is wisdom? Jesus said in Matthew 10:16, “Be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” A snake hears footsteps and quickly hides in the bushes to stay safe. In the same way, wisdom helps us see danger and avoid wrong paths. For example, if a young person hangs out with bad friends who talk about sinful things, wisdom says, “Stay away, or your faith will be hurt.” When we live with wisdom, God makes us honorable. Wisdom leads us to righteousness, and righteousness wins God’s heart, bringing us blessing and glory.
Prayer
Loving God, thank You for showing us how to win Your heart with righteousness. Help us live righteous lives, treasure Your Word like honey, and walk in wisdom. We know sin brings shame, but righteousness brings honor. Make us righteous in Your sight and lift us up to glorify Your name. We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
